Laurie Sagor has helped us to establish a beehive on the prairie. We got the bees and have been learning about their care for a couple of years—making sure the queen in still in business (she has a little orange dot on her back), checking the hive for mites and treating them, supplementing their diet with sugar water when it’s needed, checking for other unwanted guests, and just enjoying their activity. In May 2022, we harvested our first honey—2 ½ gallons from one shallow frame. It was very tasty. The bees seem to like the prairie.
