There are many birds that make their home on the prairie. Some of our favorites are the scissortail flycatchers that come in the summer and fall, the harriers and kestrals that come in the fall and winter, the many kinds of sparrows that love the prairie in the winter, and the cardinals and painted buntings that brighten up the place. We also often see great-horned owls – sometimes up close and personal.
What is a bird bio-blitz?
A bioblitz is a communal citizen-science effort to record as many species within a designated location and time period as possible. At the Creech Prairie the Bexar County Audobon Society usually leads the event, and it is usually held from 8-10am on a Saturday morning four times a year.
Monitoring nest boxes
We have established 8 nesting boxes around the prairie and are monitoring them for activity. If you are interested in monitoring the reproductive biology of birds in your area visit the Nestwatch website. https://nestwatch.org/
You can visit our eBird Creech Prairie Restoration site to get a list of some of the birds we have seen. You can also check our iNaturalist Creech Prairie Project to see some more of our friends.
